Why I Started Extreme Member. My story of starting from scratch building a membership site to $200,000 per annum, my pain in not being able to find all the things I wanted – so I started my own software company – extreme member – to make it easy for you.

Firstly we want to thank you for visiting Extreme Member. If you’re like me and most other people who at one time or another have tried to find the right membership software I feel your pain!

My name is Shane Goldberg I’m an average (Aussie) person just like you who has been fortunate enough to have some nice successes along the way in the past 5 years or so using the internet and particularly the membership site business model.

I’m just an average guy who has grown up in a average household where my Dad made an average income. No silver spoon in this mouth! I’ve been fortunate enough to rub shoulders with some top marketers and even be invited by Jeff Walker to his exclusive $5,000 per ticket Product Launch Formula event in Colorado as one of his Guest experts.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not saying any of this to boast or to try and come across like a big shot. But more to show how things can change when you do it the right way.

Before all this though I was very similar to you, I had a good idea for my internet business and just wanted to get it up and running without all the headache that I saw others having. It didn’t take long though to realize it wasn’t quite as easy as I had hoped! I soon became a FRUSTRATED and ANNOYED small business owner who was looking for an all-in-one membership software solution (this was about 5 years ago).

Around that time I was starting a Photoshop Training membership website and I really need some membership software to protect my content and allow paid members to access it via username and password plus all the other cool things you’d like your membership software to do.

I started out using a very basic script, it wasn’t bad but was quite limited in it’s features, especially with the payment gateway side of things (I had to manually take care of cancelling memberships etc which becomes a real pain when you have hundreds and thousands of members)

Once things were moving along and we were making some good money I decided it was time to upgrade, I then purchased a few more supposedly ‘Top shelf’ membership scripts and software! What a disappointment!! Hard to use, confusing, and just to rub salt in the wound they sucked! More trouble that it was worth.

So what next?

Well I thought, I’ve got 2 choices here:

1. Try and make do with these scripts and software packages that I’ve bought with their limited functionality (get a programmer to try and fix them / customize them) but still have to have multiple accounts with other providers for Email, SMS broadcasting, Affiliate Marketing, Hosting, Site management, Blogging etc OR

2. I could take the “Build my own” solution.

I opted for the 2nd choice.Why? Simply because there was nothing else out there that did what I wanted and needed and it drove me crazy the thought that there just wasn’t something really good available!

I went ahead and hired a firm of developers to develop us a custom membership script. It was a big improvement on what we had which was great but it was still limited in many areas.

At this time we were starting to make around $200,000 per year from the Photoshop site (which was about 5x what I was making from my old 9-5 job before I quit it to go full time on the internet – around 2004/05) from our first membership site. I had alot of people asking me what software we were using to run our site, how we were doing it and if they could get a copy and so on.

This is when I decided to take the plunge and start planning and building a full scale Extreme Membership Site Software Beast!
